The diplomacy is passable but pretty basic, the mid-game screams for better diplomacy or some kind of espionage system. Also the sector AI that manages your planets doesn't seem to be very good, if you don't hand them prepared and built up planets they tend to take ten times as long to make something half as efficient as the player could. The problem is the AI is fucking awful, if it loses once it never seems to properly recover, so you may get one tense war and if you win they're done, it's just a matter of slowly taking the bites every ten years until they go away. The mid-game really does feel like a chore, the early game when it's land rush and balancing everything by the seat of your pants, fending off early aggressors and trying to make some friends is pretty good. If I paid for it I would have felt like I wasted my money. It takes fucking decades to take over another empire and warfare is there are only two victory conditions that basically mean you have to conquer everyone in your way. Oh cool, I got to read this cool text bit but it basically just means +1%. Exploring is fun and all until you start being forced to deal with other empires, also, the events are all boring and meaningless anyways. Seriously, I have the game running on the background right now while making this thread and nothing has happened for decades.

It takes way too long for anything to happen, the upgrades are all boring not to mention you need one specific upgrade to do something remotely interesting or useful and you'll be spending years until they finally fucking give you the upgrade you're looking for, diplomacy is a joke on the same level as Civilization V or even Endless Space.
